The European Parliament, which has 732 directly elected members (MEPs), including six from Yorkshire and Humber is consulted about major decisions and has substantial shared power with the Council of the European Union over the EU budget.
European CommissionThe Commission is the 'executive arm' of the EU. As guardian of the EU Treaties and defender of the general interest, the Commission drafts and proposes the legislation on which the European Parliament and the Council decide.
The Commission is also responsible for implementing common policies (like the Common Agricultural Policy); it administers the budget and manages the EU's funding programmes.
Council of the European UnionThe Council of the European Union forms, along with the European Parliament, the legislative arm of the EU. The Council of the European Union contains Ministers of the governments for each of the EU Member States. It is often referred to in official EU documents as the Council of Ministers.
